Hol a Medi is the debut album of the Forwards, a band born out of jam sessions in Baltimore devoted to the music of Jamaica. These sessions, also called Hol a Medi (meaning "hold a meditation"), brought together musicians from many area ska and reggae bands. The resulting line-up of the Forwards boasts members from the Pietasters, Jah Works, the Scotch Bonnets, the Players Band, and Unity Reggae Band. As a performing band, the Forwards have shared the stage with a who's-who of reggae and ska, including LEE "SCRATCH" PERRY, YELLOWMAN, THE SKATALITES, and CULTURE.
Hol a Medi includes original music just as eclectic as those original sessions and the band's members with tracks spanning roots reggae, dancehall, and ska. These songs were written and recorded over a span of more than two years and include love songs, breakup songs, social commentary, as well as odes to cannabis and Jamaican music legends.
Coming out of a long, dark year, Hol a Medi urges its listeners to get up, get out and celebrate music once again with joyous tracks like Wiggle, Know Love Show Love, and Reggae Music Lover; and to get out and explore our love for one another with tracks I Wanna Tell Ya, Sweets, and Only Takes a Moment. A call to stand up for each other and our planet comes on Will of the People, I&I Know Dat, and Sun, Wind and Sea. Big Star, Stepping Sideways, and Leggodat explore the challenges of our commitments to our relationships. And finally, Zep Tepi, brings the record to a meditative close.
We had a lot of fun making this music, and we hope you will enjoy it...and share it!
